Legislative Updates

July 2024- Current Legislative Update:
This month, the Wisconsin State Supreme Court ruled 6-1 against the Joint Finance Committee's authority to block Stewardship program purchases, citing unconstitutional overreach by the legislature into executive branch responsibilities. Justice Rebecca Bradley authored the majority opinion, with Chief Justice Annette Ziegler dissenting. The court addressed whether legislative veto provisions violated the separation of powers, concluding they did. Looking ahead to the 2025-27 budget cycle, there are concerns that legislative Republicans may seek to restrict the program's scope if they fail to overturn the ruling. Coalition efforts are mobilizing to defend and advocate for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program's reauthorization, emphasizing community engagement and awareness campaigns. Additionally, preparations for the 2024 elections are underway, urging stakeholders to stay informed about candidates and upcoming primaries.
