Job Description

The WAWM Recreation & Community Services Department is seeking a motivated and energetic Youth Sports Intern to support our summer athletic programs. This position provides hands-on experience in youth sports programming, coaching support, league operations, and community engagement. The intern will play a key role in creating a positive, organized, and fun environment for athletes, coaches, and families while gaining valuable experience in recreation management.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program & League Support

  • Assist in organizing and managing youth sports leagues (soccer, softball, baseball, flag football, etc.)
  • Help with game-day operations including setup, field preparation, and equipment management

2. Coaching & Athlete Development

  • Assist coaches with drills, skill development, and team organization
  • Provide encouragement and guidance to athletes of all skill levels
  • Ensure that practice skills/drills are all age appropriate for each level
  • Help create a positive, inclusive, and growth-focused environment

3. Game Day Operations

  • Serve as site supervisor support during games
  • Assist with scheduling, scorekeeping, and communication between teams
  • Help ensure games run smoothly and on time
  • Ensure that all spectators, players and staff are in line with our Code of Conduct

4. Participant & Parent Engagement

  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and coaches
  • Provide excellent customer service and represent the department professionally
  • Help address questions or concerns in a positive manner

5. Behavior & Safety Management

  • Promote good sportsmanship and enforce program expectations
  • Assist in managing behavior using positive reinforcement strategies
  • Follow all safety protocols and respond to incidents as needed
  • Follow all safety protocols as it pertains to severe weather action plans

6. Administrative Support

  • Help with program setup, reports, and end-of-season evaluations
  • Support communication efforts (emails, updates, schedules)

7. Event & Program Development

  • Assist in planning and executing special events (Helfaer Field Games, Golf Outing)
  • Contribute creative ideas to enhance programs and participant experience

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Currently enrolled in college (preferred majors: Recreation, Sports Management, Education, or related field)
  • Passion for working with youth in a sports setting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Reliable, organized, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willingness to obtain)

Salary/Salary Range
$15/hour (Limit 40 hours per week)
