Job Description: 
Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses. As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more! 

Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to develop, coordinate, promote, maintain and supervise a variety of arts and enrichment programs and special events.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervise 40+ part-time and seasonal employees and volunteers that work in MSCR programs throughout the year.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include planning, implementing and supervision of year-round programs. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties will be required and assigned.

  • Research, plan, design and implement a range of special events and day trips for adults, youth and families.
  • Research, plan, design and implement a full range of adult arts and enrichment classes, workshops and programs including, but not limited to, dance, music, visual arts, drawing, fiber and textile art.
  • Research, plan, design and implement youth and adult pottery classes, workshops, events and Clay on the Move for active pottery program. Oversee two pottery studios and supervise part-time pottery program coordinators.
  • Coordinate the execution of annual Golf Outing and Online Auction fundraisers with Friends of MSCR Board.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate seasonal staff, instructors and volunteers.
  • Plan and lead seasonal staff training.
  • Conduct program visits to observe instructor techniques and evaluate instructor and program effectiveness.
  • Assist with the development of program budgets and monitor expenditures and revenue.
  • Research, purchase, organize, distribute and maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment for events and adult arts and enrichment programs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program personnel, with other MSCR staff, with the public and with other arts providers and arts organizations in the community.
  • Design and create flyers and promotional materials for programs and events.
  • Track participation statistics, maintain necessary records, develop and submit required reports.
  • Monitor and approve employee payroll.
  • Secure sponsorships and solicit donations for events and programs.• Make program specific presentations to MSCR, MMSD and community organizations.
  • Develop community partnerships for special events.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Arts Education or related field, and a minimum of three years of experience coordinating, implementing and supervising recreation classes/programs. arts and/or enrichment programs, three years supervising staff and volunteers, three years’ experience coordinating special events, event sponsorship; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work under tight deadlines, and use effective time  management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele and staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work towards improving one’s own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise and having the desire to learn in these areas.
  • Proficiency in Google docs, Microsoft Office and graphic design software• Certification in CPR or willingness to obtain it within 3 months of employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.

Working Conditions: 

1. Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
2. Position requires working evenings, nights, and some weekends.

Salary/Salary Range:
$56,056.00 – 78,228.80 Annual Salary
