Job Description
The City of Beaver Dam is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Recreation Manager. Under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Director, the Recreation Manager is responsible for performing professional duties in the planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and supervising recreational activities for all ages and abilities. This includes hiring, scheduling and supervising seasonal staff, contracted employees and volunteers, maintaining records, and ensuring quality programming. The well-qualified candidate will possess strong leadership and organizational skills, relevant experience in recreation programming, and a deep understanding of community needs and safety regulations.

Primary Services

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with program participants, the public, and City staff to ensure the smooth operation of recreational activities.
  • Create and implement recreational programs, services and events for all ages and abilities.
  • Manage sports leagues and schedules.
  • Hire, train and supervise recreation program staff, contracted employees and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with a variety of community partners to provide recreational programs, services and events.
  • Partner with local youth and adult sports organizations to ensure coordination of programs, facility needs and short/long term planning goals.
  • Plan and implement the marketing of information regarding recreational activities using seasonal program guides, posters, department web pages, email, social media, etc. 
  • Prepare and maintain various documentation such as program evaluations, performance reviews, schedules, brochures, and program descriptions.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite to manage data, prepare reports and presentations.
  • Utilize various desktop publishing programs to create marketing materials.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle as needed for program-related tasks (must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license). 
  • Conduct regular physical inventories of program supplies and equipment.
  • Set up and take down equipment (e.g., tables, chairs, sound systems, tents) for program and event needs.
  • Order supplies and equipment for recreational programs and facilities.
  • Address and resolve operational or work-related issues by listening, collaborating, and implementing effective solutions. 
  • Keep accurate statistical records to justify and support ongoing programs, services and events.
  • Provide up-to-date information to the Recreation Director regarding programs, services and events.
  • Follow all department policies and procedures.Secondary or Other Services.
  • Acts as a “substitute” for staff and volunteers when applicable and necessary. 
  • Assist with preparing and administering individual program or facility budgets as appropriate.
  • Secure alternative funding through grants, sponsorships and fundraising for programs, services and events.
  • Process program registrations and facility reservations using registration/reservation software.
  • In the absence of the Recreation Director and Office Administrator, provides back-up and acts as person in-charge of facility when designated.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned for the benefit and welfare of the Department.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Management, Event Management, Education, or a related field is required.
  • Between one and three years of experience in public-facing roles, particularly in recreation program management, is preferred.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with people of all ages.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
Salary/Salary Range

$48,515 per year

This is a Full-Time, exempt position with flexible hours; some night and weekend work will be required. The City of Beaver Dam offers a full benefit package including Wisconsin Retirement System contributions, Health Insurance, Life Insurance and optional vision/dental and more.
