The Recreation Coordinator, under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Youth Center Director, operates at the forefront of researching, planning, implementing, administrative oversight, and evaluation the City’s various recreation programs. This position has a particular emphasis on youth and adult sports and enrichment. The Recreation Coordinator plays a pivotal role in creating opportunities, programmatic execution, and sustainable operations across many ares of the City’s recreation programs.

The Recreation Coordinator responsibilities extend beyond the program execution itself. Additional responsibilities include the need for seamless program coordination across areas such as program assistance, program logistics, ensuring facility availability, supply management, and support staff programmatic direction. During the school year and summer season, this position works directly with youth at the Youth Center by planning and implementing programming at Kromrey Middle School. The Recreation Coordinator also contributes to the planning and execution of numerous special events within the Recreation Division.

  • Schedule: Full-time/40 hours per week; Full-time position with variable schedule depending on program season to include evenings and weekend hours.

Job Functions
Essential Functions
  • Develop, implement, and assess diverse recreational programs for youth and adults, covering sports and enrichment activities. This includes budget management and curriculum updates.
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate seasonal and part-time staff.
  • Lead and instruct programs and classes as necessary.
  • Coordinate procurement, organization, and purchasing of program supplies and materials.
  • Schedule class times and facility reservations in collaboration with the School District, instructors, and other program personnel.
  • Manage employee onboarding activities and ensure accurate completion of paperwork.
  • Process payroll for department personnel, verifying hours, wages, and account codes.
  • Assess program needs and identify areas for new program development.
  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of current programs.
  • Uphold safety standards for programs and participants to ensure a secure environment.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce program policies and procedures.
  • Assist in preparing departmental Recreation Guides and promotional materials.
  • Assist with office operations, including coverage and processing program registrations, facility reservations, and general office support as required.
  • Support special events as necessary.
  • Assist in providing safe, inclusive, and engaging after-school and summer activities for Youth Center participants.
  • Contribute to departmental social media postings on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of administration and execution of youth and adult recreational programs.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated competence in office administration.
  • Broad understanding and possession of cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Considerable In-depth understanding of positive youth development principles.
  • Familiarity with positive behavior management and restorative practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective interaction with a diverse population of youth and families.
  • Working proficiency in computer applications such as MS Office, RecDesk, ProCare, Social Media Applications, and publishing/design software.
  • Strong team-building capabilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in problem-solving.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to gather information, perform computations, and assist in department activities while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, or irregular hours, and the ability to make and receive contacts during irregular hours as necessary.
  • Ability to make work-related decisions following department policies and procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Bilingual at conversational level preferred, bilingual Spanish at conversational level highly preferred.

Education, Training and Experience

  • An Associate degree in education, recreation, health & physical education, outdoor education, leisure studies or a closely related field is preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified preferred, or ability to obtain within three months of hire, is required.
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor Certified highly preferred, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, is required.
  • Experience in directing seasonal and part-time employees, including monitoring work activities, providing training, and evaluating performance highly preferred.
  • Experience in community level public recreation programs required. Three (3) years or more of experience in a community-wide public recreation program preferred. Demonstration of progressive responsibility is highly preferred.
  • Experience in working with youth in public recreation programs required. Two (3) years or more of experience in a preferred. Demonstration of progressive responsibility is highly preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
